SPASTICITY

One of the biggest challenges in improving the quality of life for people with KIF1A Associated Neurological Disorder (KAND) and their loved ones is that there are not always clear-cut solutions for symptomatic treatment. Spasticity is one of the most common symptoms of KAND, and although many therapeutic methods are available, choosing the right one depends on the individual needs of the patient.

In spasticity, muscle-spinal circuits are hyperexcitable, causing a stretched muscle to react with too strong a contraction, often disrupting movements controlled by the brain. The faster the movement, the more violent the contraction, leading to jerky and uncoordinated actions. The cause is an imbalance between inhibitory and excitatory signals, resulting in stiffness, sudden movements, fatigue, and pain.
